Keeping the family organized with an internet calendar.

Imagine being at the dentists office, hair stylist, or planning a get together. You would like to know if your significant other can watch the kids, but you can't get them on their cell phone. You might schedule something, only to find out your spouse scheduled something at the exact same time for both of you. For years businesses have used calendar applications to keep companies out of this sort of conflict, but now it is possible for a family to do everything that business could do, and more with calendar applications such as Google Calendar. It's free, it's fun, and although it takes a little setup, once the setup is done it is wonderful!

1. Get a google email account for everyone in your family.

2. At the top of the email page you will see a link to Calendar.

3. On the left hand bar labeled "other calendars", click the add button, and it will drop to a few options. Choose "Add a friend's calendar".

4. You will be asked to enter a friend's calendar. Enter the Gmail address for your family member. They will be sent an email to confirm your request, and see the following screen when they click to confirm.

6. Here is an important part. You can set permissions to the other person as to what they can do to your calendar. A husband and wife would probably make the selection to "Make Changes and Manage Sharing". Once you have made your security selection then press the [Add Person] button, and then the [Save] button.

6.1. Your done! Each calendar can be set to show up as a different color, also you can copy other calendars items to your items, by just clicking on them and choosing "copy to my calendar".

Optional: Depending on what type of cell phone you have there are different choices to update and check your calendar. My wife and I have Treo's, so we use a program called GooSync. My wife uses yahoo mail, so she just synchronizes from my calendar, and our calendars on our phone always show the same thing. I have installed it on multiple iPhones and there is a very good synchronize program that Google provides for free for them. Also you can sync your outlook at work (provided your boss, or company doesn't mind) using another Google utility that installs and keeps your google calendar and your outlook calendar in harmony.
